Tokyo

As a foreigner, you can never truly become a comfortable part of Tokyo. No matter how hard you try to assimilate into Japanese culture, you will forever be a “gaijin,” or “outside person.” The impenetrable etiquette, complex traditions and bitingly modern pop culture combine to make a place that is surprisingly more alien than anywhere I’ve travelled. Yet each time I leave, I’m immediately desperate to return.
