Ávila rises up from the plains like a medieval mirage, straight out of a storybook or fantasy movie. A Unesco World Heritage site, the old town of Ávila is surrounded by formidable wall, a fortified ring of 11th-century granite. Inside the walls you find car-free cobblestone streets leading to a myriad of romanesque, gothic and baroque churches, chapels, monasteries and convents.
